Whether you're shopping for your first bike or your 21st, here's some valuable motorcycle purchasing tips to help you get the most bang for your buck.

  1. Before you price and check out specs, pick the right bike for your needs/lifestyle:

Motorcycles are a diverse species. Some massive touring bikes that weigh nearly a ton can pack a ferocious number of cc's. They're designed for rigorous highway use over the long term (for example, a trip down the historic Route 66). Conversely, some Motocross bikes weigh just 150 pounds -- they're built for zipping around dirt trails and wrangling with off-road terrain. Some flashy "danger seeking" sport bikes require massive insurance coverage; other "workaday" bikes are less flashy and easier to insure.

  2. Research and winnow your choices before you test drive:

Check out online forums, talk with other riders, and even call dealerships or manufacturers directly to ask about specs, warranty information, and driving preferences.

  3. Test drive:

Find at least three reputable dealers or sellers near you, and spend a day or two test driving. Be explicit and upfront that you don't want to buy just yet. Take rigorous test runs - so you can really see what the bike is made of. Do this not to show off, but rather to identify potential defects, performance problems, or other qualities that are disagreeable.

  4. Negotiate a price and purchase the vehicle:

Make sure you study the implications of your warranty and financing agreements - don't get pressured by salespeople or duped by an unfair business practice into signing a contract that you don't understand.
