California Lemon Motorcycle Attorneys

Here are some resources to help you avoid buying a lemon motorcycle in California.

  1. Thoroughly inspect your prospective bike before purchasing.

Check out the tires to make sure there is no uneven wear, bad alignment, or worn down rubber. Check out the shock absorbers by leaning against the bike and rocking it. Check out the tail pipe for soot build up: this could indicate valve or even engine problems. Examine the headlights, taillights, signal lights, and warning lights for functionality. Something as minor as a defective oil light can lead to massive problems, such as premature wearing down of engine parts.

  2. Take a good test drive.

Motorcyclists are not shy by nature. However, you'd be surprised at how tentative and tame most bikers are during test drives. Really give the bike a work out! Listen for engine noise. Drive on rough roads and over bumpy pavement. Keep your eyes and ears pealed for any odd smells, noises, or mechanical reactions from the bike. Drive at different speeds and make sudden starts and stops. In addition, check that the odometer's numbers line up correctly. If you notice any funny business, this could indicate odometer fraud.

  3. Be diligent when it comes to your warranty

Whether you're buying a new bike off the lot or obtaining the ride secondhand from someone you've met on Craigslist, understand the implications of your purchase contract in the event that you encounter motorcycle warranty problems later. Ask questions, such as: Is the bike covered by a third party service contract? Are the seller's guarantees built into the contract or just verbally promised? Does your bike come with the original warranty, or does it come with a renegotiated warranty?

  4. Document, document, document.

The better records you keep, the easier time you'll have getting reimbursed. For instance, if the seller smog-checked the bike recently, obtain a copy of that document and file it with your other bike purchase info. Keep copies of your warranty and any services, fluid checks, or repairs done on your bike. Document phone conversations you have with manufacturer representatives. This "dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's" business may seem tedious, buy it can be a godsend if, unfortunately, you later must file suit for damages against a recalcitrant seller or manufacturer.
